If you’re short on time, consider HIIT (high intensity interval training), and VIIT (variable intensity interval training); both provide an effective way to help you maximize your workouts. MASHUP™ offers an excellent video that will take you through the basics of interval training. The video will allow you to choose from three different intensity levels. Choose the level that’s right for you, then progress to greater intensity when you’re ready.
HIIT and VIIT Workouts for Beginners
Why Choose a HIIT Workout
A HIIT, or high intensity interval training workout, offers a number of benefits. For example, Harvard Medical School published an article explaining the health benefits of interval training. In it, they describe the essential role that aerobic or cardio training has on maintaining good health.
In the fitness world, HIIT has been a buzzword for the past decade. Now, VIIT has become just as popular. Interval training not only provides an excellent cardio workout for heart health, but it is also a great way to help get the most out of your workout. The high intensity portions of your workout will help burn more calories, and it can help to increase your metabolism. Of course, when you boost your metabolism, you’ll also be able to blast away fat faster. A higher metabolism means that you’ll continue burning calories for hours after you’ve finished your workout.
Know Your Target Heart Rate
The following chart gives a good indication of your target heart rate based on your age and fitness goals. For example, if you’re trying to burn fat, you should be aiming for a 60 – 70% range. You can calculate your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. If you want to be working at 60% for fat burning benefits, multiply your maximum heart rate by .60. If you’re a beginner, you might need to start slower and gradually build up to your target heart rate.
