The Paleo Diet goes by many names, including the Caveman Diet, Primal Diet, and Stone Age Diet. It has definitely become extremely popular in recent years; no matter what you call it. This diet is based on one simple question – what did the cavemen eat?

When you look at the Paleo diet, you’ll see that the foods are made up of things that were available to our hunter-gatherer ancestors. This could include, meats, seafood, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. This diet increases the consumption of vitamins and nutrients, while also balancing carbohydrates, protein, and fats.

 

What’s on the Diet?

Eating foods like our ancestors ate is at the center of the Paleo Diet. In other words, foods that come straight from the Earth. This would include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fresh meat. Of course, our Paleolithic ancestors didn’t grow crops or raise their own livestock, so you need to take that into consideration when planning your menus. It’s also a good idea to stick with organic produce and grass-fed meat in order to limit exposure to antibiotics, pesticides, and other chemicals that were not in existence during the Paleolithic period.

Emory University conducted research that suggests that our Paleolithic ancestors had a diet that consisted of approximately 35% of their calories from fats, 35% from carbohydrates, and 30% from protein.

One of the great benefits of following the Paleo diet is that it offers much more than just a nutritious diet that will help you lose weight. It’s also about the support that is available to those who follow this type of eating plan. There are many online forums, Meetup groups, and Facebook pages where you can connect with other paleo eaters for support and menu ideas. This type of camaraderie and support isn’t something you’ll likely find with many other diets.

 

Paleo Means No Modern Convenience Foods

When you’re following a Paleo Diet, all convenience foods will be eliminated. If it comes in a box, bag or jar, it’s not part of the diet plan. Of course, anything that wasn’t consumed back in the Paleolithic age, such as dairy, legumes, grains, and even added salt, is also not allowed on this eating plan. Honey is preferred as a sweetener, and is a much better option than using refined white or brown sugar. Alcohol is usually not included in the diet.

 

A Big Plus for Paleo Eating

One of the big benefits with this type of eating is that you eliminate processed foods. Of course, this can be great for your health. In fact, a study by Public Health Nutrition found that when people cooked at least 5 times each week, they were a whopping 47% more likely to still be alive 10 years later; compared to individuals who relied more on convenience and processed foods.
